INFORMATION ABOUT THE CALL

The ERA4Health Partnership's pilot call for clinical trials, "Fostering Pragmatic Comparative-Effectiveness Trials in Non-communicable Diseases" (EffecTrial), aims to:

  • Support randomized, interventional and pragmatic "comparative-effectiveness" studies in multiple countries
  • Enable transnational collaboration between clinical/public health research teams conducting comparative effectiveness studies in multiple countries.

Project proposals should cover all 4 of the following topics:

  1. Be a pragmatic "comparative effectiveness trials" designed as a randomized intervention trial.
  2. Compare the use of currently approved health interventions either with each other or with the current standard of care.
  3. Take into account health interventions that may include, but are not limited to: diagnostic, screening, preventive and curative interventions. Interventions can be pharmacological and non-pharmacological practices such as nutrition and/or lifestyle, surgical interventions, prognostic methods, use of medical devices, e-health, as well as other health interventions.
  4. These interventions need to be of high relevance to the public only in the areas of these specific diseases (which are equally important):
  • Cardiovascular disease;
  • Metabolic disorders;
  • Nutrition and lifestyle-related diseases;
  • Non-communicable respiratory diseases.

Clinical trials initiated by investigators from multiple countries should primarily focus on at least one of these topics or a combination of them.

Size of the project consortium:

The number of participants and their research contribution should be appropriate to the objectives of the IICS and should be reasonably balanced in terms of international participation. Each project should represent a critical mass for achieving the ambitious scientific objectives and should clearly demonstrate the added value derived from collaborative work.

A minimum of 3 and a maximum of 5 countries should be represented in the consortium (this number does not include the countries of the collaborators (see below for the original text)).

Number of countries in the consortium3-567
Number of underrepresented countries in the consortiumNo constraintsAt least 1At least 2
Maximum number of collaborators (be aware it corresponds to organisations not countries)333

List of participating countries:

Austria (FWF), Czech Republic (MZCR/AZVCR), France (Fr-MoH), Germany (BMBF/DLR), Ireland (HRB), Israel (CSO-MOH), Italy (IT-MOH), Latvia (LCS), Lithuania (LMT), Norway (RCN), Poland (NCBR), Slovakia (SAS), Spain (ISCIII, CSCJA)

*The list of participating countries is current as of 20.11.2024.

Call rules:

The call is governed by transnational rules common to applicants from all participating countries. In addition to the transnational rules, Czech applicants must also comply with the national conditions set by the relevant national provider. Applicants participating in applied research projects will therefore have to comply with national conditions based on Sub-programme 3: European Partnerships in Health.
