Professor Miroslav Ryska died

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing away on Monday 12 December 2022 in the evening Chair of the Board of the Agency for Medical Research ČR, an outstanding internationally renowned surgeon, educator, scientist, a man of great character, Prof. Miroslav Ryska, MD, CSc.

After graduating from the Faculty of General Medicine in 1978, he joined the Surgical Clinic of the Vinohrady University Hospital as an internal medicine postgraduate. In 1981, he passed the first degree attestation in surgery and in 1983 he defended his thesis at the 2nd Faculty of Medicine of Charles University (Diagnosis and treatment of upper gastrointestinal bleeding). In 1984 he worked for 4 months at the Surgical Clinic in Uppsala, Sweden, and from 1984 to 1992 he worked as an assistant at the clinic. In 1986 he passed the 2nd degree certificate in surgery. During 1986-1988 he had several short-term study stays at the Cancer Institute in Berlin-Buch. In 1991 he completed his postgraduate surgical training at Hammersmith Hospital in London. In 1992 he received his habilitation in surgery (Friedly surgery in the treatment of choledocholithiasis) and until 1994 he worked as an associate professor of surgery at the surgical clinic of the University Hospital in Vinohrady (3rd Faculty of Medicine, Charles University). In 1994 he joined the Department of Cardiovascular and Transplant Surgery at the IKEM and after completing a four-month internship at the Surgical Clinic of Virchow University in Berlin he started the liver transplantation programme at the IKEM. In 1997 and 1998 he completed month-long fellowships at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York and UCLA in Los Angeles. In 1998 he founded the IKEM Transplant Surgery Clinic, where he served as its head until 2004. Since 2004, when he was appointed Professor of Surgery at the 2nd Faculty of Surgery of the Charles University in Prague, he has worked as Chief of the Surgical Department of the Institute of Surgery and Head of the Surgical Clinic of the 2nd Faculty of Surgery of the Charles University and the Institute of Surgery. In 2007-8 he was the chief physician of the 7th Field Hospital in Kabul for 4 months. Since 2010 he was Deputy Director of the Institute for Science and Research.

His professional focus was on gastroenterosurgery, especially onco-surgery of the liver, biliary tract and pancreas. His research focused, among other things, on the issues of liver transfer, liver failure and the use of bioreactor.

He was a member of a number of Czech and international scientific societies, many of which he chaired. (Czech Surgical Society of the Czech Surgical Society of the Czech Academy of Sciences, where he was chairman from 2004 to 2016, Czech Gastroenterological Society of the Czech Surgical Society of the Czech Academy of Sciences, where he was a member of the committee from 1999 to 2014, Czech Society of HPB Surgery - Chair 1991 - 2004, Scientific Board Internal Grant Agencies /IGA of the Ministry of Health ČR- Chair 2010 - 2015, Agency for Medical Research - Chair since 2010. 2014, International hepato-pancreato-biliary association (IHPBA) - national delegate (1993 - 2014), International association of surgeons and gastroenterologists and oncologists (IASGO) - delegate for Eastern Europe (2010 - 2014), European society of transplantation - member of ELTA board (1998 - 2004), European Surgical Association (ESA) - active member (since 2011), Academia Croatica Scientiarum Medicarum - external member since 2010, honorary member of Slovak Surgical Society, Mexican Surgical Society, Croatian Surgical Society, Hungarian Surgical Society, Polish Surgical Society, Bulgarian Surgical Society, Russian Society of GIT Surgery. 

He has been a member, and often editor-in-chief, on the editorial boards of domestic and international journals (Rozhledy v chirurgii - deputy editor-in-chief (2008 - 2016), editor-in-chief (since 2017), Czech and Slovak Gastroenterology and Hepatology (1998 - 2014), Bulletin HPB – šéfredaktor (1993 – 2008, kdy se časopis sloučil s Rozhledy v chirurgii), Folia gastroenterologica and hepatologica (2000 – 2010), Klinická onkologie od roku 2012), ze zahraničních European Surgery (od r. 2004, Annals of transplantation (since 1999), Annals of), HPB (1993 - 2014), Revista Portuguesa de Chirurgia (2013 - present)).

He was a member of the scientific boards of: the 2nd Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Prague (1999-2005), IGA MZ ČR - member (1999-2009 and then until 2014 Chair), FZSP of Trnava University - member, external member (2008-present), Board UEM ČSAV (2007-2016).

He had an extensive publishing activity: author of more than 170 scientific papers published in domestic and foreign scientific literature. He has delivered over 300 lectures in domestic and international professional forums.
