ERA4Health Partnership: a pilot call for clinical trials is about to be announced!

A key effort of the ERA4Health partnership (Fostering a European Research Area for Health) is to create flexible and efficient coordination between funding organisations in the European Research Area (ERA) in priority areas addressing European public health needs. This partnership provides an opportunity to increase European transnational joint research funding.

The aim of the call is to support randomised, interventional and pragmatic 'comparative-effectiveness' studies in multiple countries initiated by clinical trial researchers, as well as to facilitate transnational collaboration between clinical/public health research teams (hospitals/public health, health facilities and other health organisations) conducting comparative-effectiveness studies in multiple countries.

Project proposals should address all 4 of the following points:

  1. Being a pragmatic "comparative-effectiveness" study, designed as a randomized intervention trial.
  2. Compare the use of currently approved health interventions either with each other or with the current standard of care.
  3. Take into account health interventions that may include, but are not limited to, diagnostic, screening, preventive and therapeutic interventions. Interventions may be pharmacological or non-pharmacological, such as nutrition and/or lifestyle, surgical interventions, prognostic methods, use of medical devices, digital health , as well as other health interventions.
  4. These interventions must be of high public relevance for the following specific diseases or conditions (which are equally important):
  • cardiovascular disease;
  • metabolic disorders;
  • nutrition and lifestyle-related diseases;
  • non-communicable respiratory diseases.

Clinical trials initiated by investigators from multiple countries should primarily focus on at least one of these major diseases/conditions, although project proposals may also address several of these diseases/conditions and/or other related comorbidities.
